Walking over the Sydney Harbour Bridge & the Art Gallery of NSW

Hi everyone,

In my blogpost before I talked about the fun excursions with Mrs White and today I want to tell you about one of them.

On Thursday the 7th of February we had an amazing day! We started the day at school in library. Mrs White, two Japanese exchange students, Phoebe and I gathered together in the library. We were going to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. To prepare ourselves, Mrs White thought it might be a nice idea to look at some famous Australian artists and their paintings so we looked at some art books.

After we had had a look in the library we travelled by train to the city. When we arrived, we walked for a little while through one of the oldest parts of Sydney and then we arrived at Millers Point. Apparently, some scenes of the Australian show “Dance Academy” have been recorded at this place and a lot of weddings are held here. We walked some more and then we arrived at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We walked over it and Mrs. White told us some things about the bridge and about Sydney itself as we had a good overview of the city from the bridge. The story that had the biggest impact on me was the one of a man named Vincent Kelly who fell of the bridge during the time of construction of the road level. He survived by throwing his hammer in the water and thereby he broke the surface tension.

When we arrived at the other side of the bridge, we had a short break very close to Luna Park and we had a look around there. Then it was time to catch the ferry. We spend about 20 minutes on the ferry. Ferries are definitely my favourite type of transport here in Sydney. You have such great views over the city and I love sitting outside in the sunshine (I have to put a lot of sunscreen on though, you get sunburnt really quickly here!). When we came off the ferry, we walked by the Sydney Opera House and we had a look inside. Afterwards, we took some pictures in front of the Sydney Opera House and Mrs White told us to pose like models. Very disappointedly, I found out later that I was the only one who showed her full model potential and the Japanese exchange students and Phoebe looked well… less sparkling. I was like, “wait a second was I the one who embarrassed themselves on the stairs? My second thought was, “I hope these pictures won’t randomly appear on the RLW Instagram page and everyone will think these are my normal poses.” Luckily this was not the case and I will continue to act like I am Taylor Hill whenever I can ;-)!

After our stop at the Sydney Opera House, we walked through the Royal Botanical Gardens where Phoebe and I had been before. We stopped to have a closer look at some pretty flowers. When we walked out of the gardens, we were very close to Art Gallery of New South Wales. Mrs White had asked us in a meeting what we would really like to visit/do when we go on an excursion with her. Me, as the art lover that you know I am from my previous posts, asked if we could go to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Also, one of my former teachers who’s an Australian had recommended going to the Art Gallery, so if you get a tip from a real Aussie, you know it’s good right? We had lunch close to the museum. Once we arrived in the art gallery we looked at some paintings of artists which we had discussed earlier that morning and we had to pick a painting that was our favourite and explain why. Due to time constraints (MUN’ers where you at?), we couldn’t see the entire art gallery because it’s very large but from what I’ve saw, I was really impressed. Afterwards, it was time to head back to school. We walked through a pretty neighbourhood and then caught the train back to school.

As you can possibly imagine, this day was really amusing and we got to see some more of the beauty Sydney has to offer!

I will speak to you soon!

With love,

Frederique
