Bondi Beach, Hard Work pays off!
Hi everyone,
It’s me again, Frederique! Back with a new blogpost from Sydney!
Monday night we went to Bondi Beach for Cathy’s (Alyssa’s mom) birthday. Yes, for real we went to Bondi Beach! If you don’t know what Bondi Beach is then one; you probably don’t know what Pinterest is either (shame on you)! And two; you most surely wonder, “Frederique why repeat two times that you went to this beach? What's so special about it?” Visiting this beach has been on my Bucketlist for three years now and I still can’t believe I have visited it! It even made me wonder if I wasn’t dreaming up the entire exchange program in Australia. I’m not even kidding; While we were eating diner at Bondi, I pinched myself in the arm to check if my life was not a dream. If at this point you’re still wondering why Bondi Beach is so special to me, I will explain that to you now. Bondi Beach is one trendiest beaches on Earth. It has a pool and not just any pool; the Iceberg pool! This pool is one of the most instagrammable places in the universe. Besides that, the pool club organizes the so called "Lilac Swim" every winter. Everyone can compete in this race. People compete against each other in the pool which is filled with ice. With this event, the Icebergs pool club raises money for the NELUNE Foundation. I know, I know.. this is a pretty COOL fact ;-). You know what’s also cool? A series called “Bondi Rescue” is recorded at this beach. So if you ever drown in the big waves of the ocean you will get rescued by a hot guy and it will be broadcasted on television. I still can’t decide whether this is a nice thing or not. I hope you now understand why I wanted to visit this beach so badly.
Sitting at a table with an amazing view at Bondi Beach made me realize one important thing and that is that hard work ALWAYS pays off! I don’t want to praise myself or anything but I feel like I could say that so far I have always worked hard when it comes to my school work. In the eyes of others maybe even a little too hard. I still remember When a classmate said to me, “You are working so hard to keep your grades up all the time but in the end we will both pass this year and I will pass without all the stress you experience.” I pretended I didn’t work thát hard for my grades when in reality I was wondering if this person was right,“Why was I always working so hard? Was I really doing all of this for nothing? Didn't my grades matter right now?” Nevertheless, I have always kept hustling like I had before. I mean.. I am born with the curse called perfectionism so it is hard for me to change anyways, hahaha!
Now that I look back on my school years so far, I am glad that I have always kept grinding even though I sometimes wondered why the hell I was staying up so late or why that one grade for history was such a big thing to me. I believe that it is this hard-working attitude that has brought me to Australia, to Sydney, to Bondi Beach.
A quote by Dr. Seuss that hangs above my desk is, “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” I guess this quote, especially the last sentence, applies to me right now. Not only me, but also to my friends. I don’t want to speak for them, but I would say they are all hard-working girls. Look at us now! Four of us are on exchange; two of us are surfing at Muizenberg and visiting the Cape of Good Hope and the other two of us are climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and swimming in the Icebergpool. When you think about it, it’s insane what we get to experience at such a young age and all of this thanks to our work at school! The moment I really realized how amazing all of this is, was when Phoebe and I facetimed with our friends in South Africa and swapped our travel stories.
To talk a bit more about monday night itself, I had so much fun! We had diner at the Iceberg pool club and as I said our table had a fantastic view on the pool. For diner I ordered chicken (chicken seems to be a returning subject on this blog. No worries, I eat other things beside chicken, hahaha!) which was delicious. Also, at the diner place we met up with Phoebe’s former babysitter who was so sweet and told us stories about her time in Sydney as a student. As a birthday present, Phoebe and I gave Cathy a candle with a very nice smell scent. After diner while the sun was setting, we walked along the skate walls which were decorated with lovely street art. To end the night, we topped off with an ice cream.
To finally come back to the questions my younger self was asking, I feel like I have the right answers for her now, “Keep doing you. Embrace your ambition! Even when you wonder about the purpose of everything, just continue! Right now, you probably can't tell how your math grades and the Sydney Opera House are related but they are. Great things will come. Things greater than you could possibly dream of right now!” And what I would add based on what I’ve learned from my exchange experience in Australia so far, “Take it a bit easier on yourself mate! ;-) Things will work out!”
Today's post was quite personal but I hope I've managed to bring my point across and that you enjoyed reading. I will speak to you soon!
With love,
Frederique
